Next Activities Meeting: Wednesday, September 18th, 7 PM at Pam Smit's house at 18229 13th NW. Please call 533-0240 and let her know if you can make it.

You'll want to attend this one as we will be covering a lot of ground! Playground Phase III , Landscaping Improvements, Salmon BBQ overview, Tennis Program results, and more. Bring your calendars (and school calendars) so we can all get in the "back-to-school" mode.

News Update!!! Bubbles the Clown will be making an appearance at the upcoming Salmon BBQ on Friday, September 6th. So be sure to bring the kids, your camera, and a big appetite and let's make this end of the season closer a memorable one! We even extended the time an extra hour (event now goes until 8pm!) Send your payment with the enclosed flyer right away if you haven't done it already so you don't have to pay extra the day of the event. Questions? Call Pam Smit 533-0240 or Chris Kocher at 533-1223.

On the Wall, a painting, finishing and wall covering company has been doing some private work in our community. We asked them to give us (Activities' Committee) a bid for cleaning and refurbishing of the memorial bench located next to the ball fields. They came back with a bill of "NO CHARGE"!!! We would like to say thank you to On the Wall for helping us spruce up our community!

Thank you, thank you to Joyce Michelson, Junior Tennis Coordinator for years of implementing the tennis program and making it the successful program that it is today. Also , we want to extend a hearty welcome to the new "trainees" Kimber Bang and Heidi Nelson who took over this past season.

Need Community Hours??? Hey teens, need to get some "credit?" We need your help with the children's activities during the Salmon BBQ. Please plan on coming to a brief meeting on Tuesday, September 3rd at 4:30 pm in front of the clubhouse. Call Chris Kocher at 533-1223 or Pam Smit 533-0240 and let us know if we can count on you!

Activities Committee…WHO, WHAT WHEN, WHERE, AND WHY…

WHO: We are a group of self-selecting community volunteers who organize and execute a variety of activities open to the neighborhood. We also recruit, cajole, encourage (and sometimes beg or plead) others to join in and help make these events happen.

WHAT: To name a few, the Egg Hunt, Salmon Barbeque, Holiday Party, and the Rummage Sale, our largest fundraiser, are some of the events supported by the Activities Committee. The successful women's and junior tennis programs are also sponsored by us. We don't just dole out jobs. We can tell you what's happening in your community and the projects we are doing. Just come and listen, learn and take on as much or little as you want.

WHEN: You may join us at anytime!! Meeting dates are always posted in the bulletin and you may call Chris at 533-1223 or Pam at 533-0240 to find out more. It's a great way for newcomers in the neighborhood to meet people and get involved. Some members are active all year-round and some help at certain times--it's up to you! We appreciate anyone who gives of their time, talent, expertise, etc.

WHERE: We meet at members' homes, and usually in the evening. Sometimes we meet during the daytime.

WHY: Don't ask what your community can do for you, but what you can do for your community!!

Do you have any new neighbors?

If so, please contact the Hospitality Committee so they can deliver a welcome packet. The hospitality committee is:

Kathleen Malarky 546-2341
Sylvia Moren 546-4221

2002 JUNIOR TENNIS

This summer we had over 100 junior tennis players taking lessons and 22 players on the tennis team. It was a very good tennis summer-only one half day of rain!

The tennis team really had a lot of fun this summer. The boys tennis team placed third in the top division of the North End Junior Tennis League. Klahaya and Harbor Square placed ahead of us. Our girls' team really improved this year and we hope to have more girls from the advanced intermediate classes out for the team next summer. We have a young team and if everyone keeps playing, we should do even better next summer!

Many thanks to the drivers who drove carpools to the tennis matches. Special thanks go to Kimber Bang, who organized the carpools and managed the team. We also had a super end-of-season party, with awards given out by Coach Owen and root beer floats for all, thanks to the efforts of Heidi Nelson.

I have really enjoyed managing the junior tennis program for the last 12 years. Kimber and Heidi will be coordinating the program next summer. Please call them if you have any suggestions or questions. Thanks!
-Signing off, Joyce Michelson

Agenda for the September 10th 7:00 PM Board Meeting
(Note: Meetings are now being held on the

  • Discuss Board Meeting comment policy

Agenda Topics Description
1) Non-view covenant enforcement proposal:

  • Complainant tries to work out conflict with neighbor
  • If this fails complainant completes and submits petition to the Board. Board may or may not act on petition.
  • If Board acts: Board will consider if complaint violates Shoreline Municipal Code and initiate action. Board may write a letter to respondent, giving 30 days for compliance. If violation continues after 30 days, then respondent's address and violation will be published in the Bulletin
  • If Board does not act: Write letter to complainant explaining why the Board chose not to act

Covenants are available on our Web site

2) Special Master Process:
In 1989, the Superior Court created a 'Special Master Process' and appointed a court special master to rule on the tree height amendment in individual cases. Although there was a fee for the Special Master services, it was much more cost effective than bringing the cases to court, and costs were typically shared by all parties involved. Hundreds of petitions were processed during the following years and views were restored.

In 1992, the Superior Court decided that the majority of the work that the covenants were intended to accomplish had been completed. In 1993, The Innis Arden Board developed the "Petition for Relief Under View Preservation Covenants", to replace the Special Master Process. The current Board is unable to identify any view dispute resolutions resulting from the 1993 petition process. Since then, trees have grown out of compliance and views are again disappearing.

The Board is considering reinstituting the Special Master Process to resolve view disputes.

3) Board Meeting Comment Policy
The Board's intent is to limit the length of Board meetings by establishing a comment policy. The following is modeled after the City of Shoreline's Council Meeting Policy:

  • If you wish to speak on a subject whether it is on the agenda or not, you can comment up to two minutes at the beginning of the meeting. This portion of the meeting will be limited to twenty minutes. A maximum of three persons will be permitted to speak to each side of any one topic.
  • You can also speak for up to two minutes at the end of the meeting which will be limited to 20 twenty minutes.

4) Police Patrols and Trail Maintenance at Boeing Creek
Officer Mann from the Shoreline Police has been patrolling Boeing Creek, issuing tickets for trespassing, parking and liquor violations. He wants to know if there are hours when Boeing Creek is closed to residents.

Gene Lewis has expressed frustration with trail maintenance in Boeing Creek reserve. Recently, kids have been building dams at the Sound side of the track underpass thus damming the creek and creating a pool under the track and flooding the trail. He has removed several dams only to have them reappear. The latest efforts by the dam builders have used rocks of such size that he cannot move them. He suggests that we hire some neighborhood youths to do trail maintenance. He would also like us to construct or have constructed a trail suitable for an ATV so equipment could be used on the trail maintenance.

5) Playground Rental
During the June Board meeting, a motion was passed to discontinue rental of our playfield to soccer and baseball leagues, due to parking shortages, increased trash, and the declining condition of the playfield. Since then, the Board has been reconsidering this motion and will discuss renting the playfield to soccer and baseball leagues at the rate of $750 each with the stipulation that the soccer and baseball associations must keep pool parking clear and must pick up trash. Failure to do so would result in the cancellation of the remainder of the season's contract. Additionally, the Board will discuss obtaining a game schedule from the leagues.
