Membership and Annual Use Permit Holders Policy Information

INNIS ARDEN SWIMMING CLUB, INC.
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR
NEW AND PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS
(updated April 1, 2007)

WELCOME TO THE INNIS ARDEN SWIMMING CLUB! The following information is designed to acquaint you with our activities and procedures. Please take the time to read the pool rules. The pool season typically extends from one week before Memorial Day to one week after Labor Day with limited hours while school is in session. We do sometimes extend an extra week in September if staffing is available. Our membership is limited to 250 families. The tennis program is not part of the Swim Club. Pop and Popsicles are sold at the pool, but other food items, and glass containers, are not permitted on the deck. Pool temperature is maintained at approximately 85 degrees.

Pool memberships may only be sold through the Swim Club, and dues must be current at the time of sale. (The best time to place a membership for sale is at the END of the swim season.) This is done by notifying the membership chair or the treasurer, in writing. It is best done at the end of summer, rather than in the spring, because they are sold in the order in which they are put up for sale. If not sold by the time yearly dues become owing, then dues have to be paid again or the membership is forfeited. The bills go out about 4/1, are due by 5/1 for free guest passes, by 5/19 to avoid forfeiture and in any case before swimming. Resident Members must also be current with Innis Arden Club, Inc. dues to swim.

POOL STAFF. Responsibility for the day-to-day operations rests with the Manager. There are two certified lifeguards on duty at all times. A maintenance crew cleans the dressing rooms and pool area daily. Two (or three) coaches are responsible for the junior swim team. There are separate coaches for the master's swim team and water polo.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS. Overall operation of the facility rests with the Board. There are seven Board members, who are elected for two-year terms. This election takes place at the annual Membership Meeting, held the first Tuesday in June. Only Resident Members may be elected to the Board of Directors.

CHECK-IN AND GUESTS. Please remember to sign in each time you enter the pool. Guests must also sign-in and the member must accompany the guest, inform the pool staff, and pay for guests at that time. Twenty free guest passes are given to each member whose dues are paid by May 1st. No more than 6 guests may be brought in at one time, unless PRIOR arrangements have been made with the Manager.

CHILDREN AT THE POOL. Children must be accompanied IN THE WATER by an adult unless they have passed a POOL TEST, administered by a lifeguard, consisting of swimming two consecutive lengths of the pool and jumping off the diving board. FLOTATION DEVICES ARE NOT PERMITTED. No child may swim in the wading pool unless an adult is INSIDE the enclosure. Diving is not permitted in the shallow end. Each child's emergency information form must be filled out before the child will be permitted to enter the water.

LAP LANE. A roped-off lane is available at all times, except during water-walking, for adult lap swimming. No reservation is necessary.

POOL RENTAL. The pool may be rented for private parties, from 9 to 10 PM or before opening on weekends. Lifeguards are provided and the cost varies with the number of swimmers.

POOL USAGE. Full use of the pool, including team participation, extends to a member's children and grandchildren, even if they do not live in the community.

LOST AND FOUND. A great many suits, towels and clothing items are left at the pool. Members are encouraged to mark these items, particularly team suits and sweats, and check periodically for lost items. Leftovers go to the Innis Arden Rummage Sale.

SWIM TEAM. Innis Arden belongs to the Seattle Summer Swim League and competes with other swim clubs in the area: Klahaya, Aqua Club, View Ridge, Sheridan Beach, Blue Ridge, Wedgwood, Sandpoint. Any child who can swim one length of the pool may join. Events are arranged by age group and eligibility extends through age 18. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn competitive swimming in a relaxed environment and to become friends with neighborhood kids of all ages. Workouts are in the evening until school is out, and then on weekday mornings, scheduled by age group. Meets, approximately 8, are on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings, beginning in late June and continuing through July. Those who qualify will swim in the All-City competition, held on the first Tuesday in August. Team members receive ribbons after each event and a trophy at the awards ceremony at the end of the season. There is a small charge for team participation. An assortment of parties and events is scheduled throughout the season in addition to the team competitions.

SWIM LESSONS. Lessons are recommended for all team members and anyone wishing to learn proper stroke techniques. Classes are small and are open to people outside the community. They begin when school is out, with classes on the half hour from 11 AM to 1 PM. Adult classes are offered occasionally if there is sufficient interest.

WATER POLO. The water polo teams usually begin practice in early June, with meets starting the end of July and run through August with a tournament capping the season.

MASTERS SWIM TEAM. This is open to all swimmers one year after high school graduation. It is a casual, fun way to stay in shape and improve your swimming. We have a wide range of age and ability, but we all have a god time. Coached workouts are most weeknights, 6:15 to 7 PM, beginning in late June and running through July. We have one meet, in late July, against the adults from the other north end swim clubs, and a great party to end our season.

Membership and Annual Use Permit Holders Policy Information

(updated April 1, 2007)

Over the years, there have been questions regarding membership policies and use of the pool by non-resident annual use permit holders that are not explicitly covered in our bylaws. To clarify some of the questions, the following is a summary of current policy which may be modified from time to time at the discretion of the Innis Arden Swimming Club (IASC) Board of Directors.  Questions may be addressed to any IASC Board member.

There are two categories of pool users at Innis Arden Swimming Club. One is a resident member and the other is a non-resident, annual use permit holder.   IASC bylaws currently provide for a maximum of 250 families, including both resident members and annual use permit holders.  Residents of Innis Arden have first priority to pool membership. Non-residents may apply for consideration as an annual use permit holder. If resident memberships do not fill the maximum number of users allowed according to the bylaws, non-resident annual use permit holders may be added at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

Resident Memberships

1) A resident member is a property owner in Innis Arden. The pool privileges extend to the children and minor grandchildren of the member, even if they do not reside in Innis Arden.

2) A resident membership is forfeited if the annual dues are not paid before June 1. If a resident member sells the Innis Arden property, becomes deceased, or if the member wishes to resign the membership, the membership must be sold to the Club or forfeited. If the Club is unable to sell the membership within the same season of forfeiting or resigning, no portion of the membership fee is refunded.

3) If the selling resident member wishes to become a non-resident annual use permit holder, an application for a non-resident annual use permit must be completed and their name will be added to the "previous resident" waiting list.

4) In the case of a divorce, the membership remains only with the parent/individual who retains ownership of the Innis Arden property. It does not include the non-resident parent/individual or any new family members of the non-resident parent/individual. The non-resident parent/individual may use the pool with the resident minor children, but may not bring guests or new family members. Only swim club members may bring guests to the pool. A divorce cannot result in two separate families/individuals using one membership, nor can the membership be divided.

5) Resident members may allow a renter or house guest to use the pool membership. A written notice of this intent must be provided to the pool manager prior to pool use. The membership is not assignable to any other persons living outside the community.

6) Limited Use Memberships.  In 2007, the IASC introduced a Limited Use Membership category for resident members.  This category is aimed at providing a limited use of the pool, at reduced cost, to “empty nesters” or those who may not use the pool activities to the extent a family might.  In addition to policies 1-4 above, the following considerations apply to a Limited Use Membership:

a.      Member has been a full Resident member in good standing for at least 10 years.

b.      Limited Use Membership is limited to an adult individual or couple.  No children or grandchildren may use the membership.

c.      No guest privileges are included with the membership.  Guest passes held during Full Membership status are forfeited when the member transitions to a Limited Use Member.

d.      The membership is limited to 50 swim sessions per season.  Member may use more than one swim session per day (e.g. Scenario 1: Early morning lap swim is one swim session.  Afternoon water walking on the same day is a second swim session.  Total swim sessions used for the day would be two. Scenario 2: If husband and wife come to lap swim together, two swim sessions are used.).

e.      Unused swim sessions do not carry over to the next swim season.

f.       Annual dues for the Limited Use Membership will be based on one quarter of the Full Membership annual dues.

g.      The total number of Limited Use Memberships will be limited to 10.  This maximum number can be modified by the IASC Board at its discretion.

h.      Persons holding a Limited Use Membership may return to a Resident Membership status at the start of a pool season by notifying the IASC Treasurer of their intent and paying Resident Membership dues.

i.        Persons holding a Limited Use Membership must be current residents of Innis Arden.  Former residents may not hold a Limited Use Membership.

Annual Use Permit Holders

1) A non-resident annual use permit holder has the same obligations and pool privileges as a resident member, except for voting rights at the annual meeting.

2) Annual Use Permit Holders must reside within the following geographic boundaries:

a. South Boundary- N. 145th Street
b. East Boundary- Aurora Avenue N
c. West Boundary- Puget Sound
d. North Boundary- N. 205th Street
e. The community of Woodway is included in the geographic boundaries.

The Annual Use Permit and all pool use privileges are forfeited if the holder moves outside these boundaries.

 3) The total number of Annual Use Permits is reviewed and adjusted, if needed, on an annual basis at the discretion of the IASC Board.  The Board will always give priority to providing space for new Innis Arden resident members.

 4)  Annual use permits are considered year-to-year agreements and carry no right of renewal. It is the intent of the Board to manage the number of spaces available so that there is always space available for new resident members.  However, in the event that the number of existing Annual Use Permits must be decreased in any year to accommodate new resident members, it will be done on a “last in-first out” basis.

 5) An application for an Annual Use Permit must be made on forms provided by IASC, including a letter of sponsorship by a current Resident Member (either Full or Limited Use).  This application must be submitted to the IASC at the address specified on the application form.  This application process does not apply to those persons having existing Annual Use Permits prior to the end of the 2006 swim season.

6) If an annual use permit holder does not pay the annual use fee before May 1, the pool use privileges and all prior fees are forfeited.  The initial fee is non-refundable unless the Annual Use Permit is not renewed by action of the IASC Board of Directors within 4 seasons of initial use due to demand for new resident memberships.  Up to 50% of the initial fee may be refunded to the permit holder if the Annual Use Permit is not renewed for this reason.

7) Annual use permits cannot be sold or assigned by the permit holder.

8) In the case of family divorce, only one parent/individual may retain pool privileges under the annual use permit.  It is the responsibility of the annual use permit holder to notify Innis Arden Swimming Club of any such change in status and provide the name of the party retaining pool privileges.  Failure to notify may result in the termination of the annual use permit at the discretion of the IASC Board of Directors.
